First of all the photos in this book are truly inspiring. Approximately half are shot in studio the other half at exotic locations. Mostly implied nudity or topless and a bunch of body close ups and head-shots. There are 8 color photos, the rest are in B&W. I wish there were more color photos as Russell's color photos are outstanding. Maybe for his next book, hint hint ;^)I love Russell James's photography and his taste in models but the physical quality of Angels is just good and not extraordinary and not deserving of the expensive retail price as I've seen better by the same publisher for much less. A personal issue I had was that there are over 60 pages that are blank. Were those for me to fill in with my imagination? After going through this book the first time, I felt like the emperor when he found out he bought expensive invisible clothing that wasn't actually there. Well not that bad but you catch my drift.If you love "supermodels" and Russell James's work, I would recommend Russell's previous book V2 over Angels (unless you love Sara Sampiao like I do,she's not in his previous books, that's why I'm keeping it ;^) because in addition to the excessive amount of blank pages, there are a number of photos that were previously published in V2 that were republished in Angels. Some actually appear to be crops and or horizontally flipped around, such as some photos of; Miranda Kerr, Brooklyn Decker, Candice Swanepoel, Jarah Mariano, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley... so as to create the illusion of having new photos to look at. Sorry it didn't fool me.Had this book been called "V3", without the repeated photos and the numerous empty pages, I would have given it a 5 out of 5. I don't normally complain about books but given the expensive price along with the above mentioned issues, the best I can do is 3. Mr. James is one of the most superb photographers I have seen in years. He is gifted with the ability to draw out the central personality of the supermodels he photographs. He avoids what is likely a very strong temptation to photograph these beautiful women in a men's magazine style. Conversely, on the physical level, he uses his lens to capture the unique curves of each woman and emphasize their human beauty. On the spiritual level he is a master of teasing out the model's spirit and energy. These are the gifts of an artist; they can't be quantified or taught in a classroom.Importantly, Mr. James is one of those people exerting a positive influence on the American fashion media, both print and social Web forms, from recoiling in terror at the sight of a nude breast. While quality magazines worldwide frequently publish minor amounts of nudity, they rarely come close to the paucity printed in US editions, On the Web, social media sites behave in the same way.Sadly, the work of a fine artists like Mr. James are viewed as "radical fashion photography". The beauty of the human body, integrated with work of great clothing designers, needs to be less prudish in the mass media of the future. This is a fantastic book!
This gorgeous book offers another serving of Russell Jame's figure photography - something I can't get enough of. His background in glamour photography comes through in every image, honoring the native beauty of each model even as she becomes an element in a larger image.Although the models themselves tend toward a type, the collection spans a range of looks: B&W or color, studio or exotic locale, intimate closeups and half- or whole-length portraits, or scenes of sand and water. And, even in full nudity, James keeps the images tasteful and respectful. Any looking for titillation can just keep looking.Another reviewer points out overlap between this collection and another of James's - so be it. There's still plenty of new work to enjoy, and I enjoy it very much.-- wiredweird
(1.) I didn't know if the book is big?(2.) But the book is entertaining none the less!(3.) Bottom line, the book is okay to look at.
This is a lovely collection of photographs but unfortunately I have received three defective copies in a row from Amazon. On all three copies the spine is very loose or broken entirely, and the glue cracks and splits when you open the book up on a table. Binding glue is exposed inside the cover. The white seam of the gutter can be seen in the middle of many spreads, which is really distracting when most of the gutters should be black. There is also a white powdery debris on most pages, it's very noticeable against the mostly black pages. It's almost like chalk, perhaps some debris from the broken binding? I've requested a fourth copy so I'll update this review when I receive it. This is disappointing from what is otherwise a great collection of photography.If it weren't for the poor quality, the photography, the size, the reproduction quality of the images would give this a 5 star rating. The price is ridiculously low for how good it is, but maybe that's because they cut corners on the binding.
